As Bea and Sancho exit Lysander's room dressed like slaves, They are met by the foreman (Mr. Thalidomide) who has a nicely dressed goblin slave girl in tow.

She is one of the many, many young boys and girls stolen from their homes to service the miners. Management finds that “comfort persons” as they are called are a much cheaper alternative to miner loyalty than a livable wage, proper care and nutrition, and tools that work.

Thalidomide in particular works his miners hard and long to procure the diamonds, rubies, jaspar, and opal that are making him very rich. Rich enough to grease the king’s pockets in exchange for a title and land back in Romani.
